Virginia DOC Release Paths
The Virginia Department of Corrections operates state prisons and community corrections. Its public locator also covers some state-responsible people housed in local or regional jails, institutional-hospital placements, and Community Corrections Alternative Program participants. A Henry County arrest does not automatically create a VADOC record. State responsibility depends on the sentence and legal authority, not merely on where the arrest occurred.
A VADOC departure may be discharge after the identified sentence is satisfied, parole on an eligible sentence, movement to probation or post-release supervision, transfer to another institution, or delivery to a detainer holder. A person listed at Martinsville District 22 is outside secure confinement but remains under state supervision. Someone handed to another authority remains in custody. The precise release mode and receiving agency matter more than a generic “released” label.

Search Virginia DOC Release Records
Open the Inmate and Supervisee Locator and accept its disclaimer. A seven-digit DOC ID is the strongest search key. Name searches require the first three letters of the first name and the full last name. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. Compare identifiers before relying on a result, especially when names are common.
Write down the exact custody or supervision status, listed institution or district, any release-date label, and the day of access. VADOC says information is updated daily and may be inaccurate or outdated. The locator is useful for current state custody and supervision, but the department does not promise an exhaustive archive after final discharge. Absence can reflect a name variation, update lag, a different system, or completed VADOC authority.

- Use optional filters only when identity facts support them.
- Read institution, district, and status as separate fields.
- Treat a future date as projected unless the source calls it completed.
- Request the signed record for durable proof of actual release.
Virginia DOC Records Contact
Questions about a specific record should go to the unit that maintains it, such as the institution superintendent or the chief of the assigned probation and parole district. VADOC's general contact can route a request when the maintaining unit is unknown. Include the legal name, seven-digit DOC ID when available, approximate dates, and the exact documents requested. Avoid asking the agency to create a conclusion that does not already exist.

For a durable release record, request the notification-of-release letter, signed Order of Release, Conditions of Probation or Parole when applicable, actual date, release mode, last institution, community district, and any receiving-agency or detainer entry. Virginia Parole Board records require a separate request. The Board decides discretionary parole matters, while VADOC manages custody, release processing, and community supervision. A monthly Board report may document a grant or denial. It does not record the exact time the person left a prison. Use the Board record for the decision and VADOC for the completed movement.
Virginia DOC Release Documents
The VADOC facility-release page states that a person satisfying the sentence is discharged or leaves on parole and receives a notification-of-release letter. Depending on the case, the person signs an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, and Conditions of Parole before a witness. Those documents provide direct evidence of the legal transition and conditions that follow it.
VADOC says release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. The statement does not promise a morning release or a particular pickup window. Property, money, medication, transport arrangements, and required signatures are processed through the state system. County rules at Henry ADC should not be substituted for VADOC's statewide process.

Virginia DOC Projected Releases
VADOC Operating Procedure 010.3 uses the term “projected release date.” Projection is a live computation, not a promise. Inputs can include credited pretrial jail time, the total active sentence, concurrent or consecutive structure, offense date, earned-credit system, earning class, discipline, and later court action. A detainer may also change the practical destination even when the state term ends on schedule.
Good Conduct Allowance applies to certain older parole-eligible offenses. Earned Sentence Credits govern covered modern felonies. Virginia Code §§ 53.1-202.2 through 53.1-202.4 define credits and eligibility categories. Some eligible sentences can earn at a different rate from listed excluded offenses. The common 85-percent statement is only shorthand for part of the truth-in-sentencing system. It cannot calculate an individual's date without the judgment and complete credit record.
VADOC calculates active state-responsible sentences longer than 12 months. Other calculations can remain with a local or state authority depending on the sentence. Virginia DOC Supervision Records
A result assigned to a probation and parole district can be strong evidence that secure custody ended. It does not mean all state authority ended. Martinsville District 22 is the local VADOC community-supervision office for Henry County navigation. A district listing may reflect parole, probation, or post-release supervision. Particular programs or residential limits may apply, and personal case-management details may not be public.
No official countywide roster lists every person on probation. Use the VADOC locator first, then contact the displayed district for confirmation it may lawfully provide. A person may be discharged from incarceration without parole, or may serve probation without ever entering a VADOC prison. A no-match cannot be converted into a claim that there was no prior custody or supervision.
VADOC's NAAVI notifications distinguish an advanced notice, which concerns an anticipated release date, from an actual release-date notice sent when the person is no longer in VADOC custody. Jail VINE registration does not automatically migrate into state notifications. When a Henry County jail alert suggests transfer into VADOC, the state locator and state notification system become the relevant channels.
Virginia DOC Release Evidence
Use each source for its proper task. A signed court judgment controls the sentence imposed. VADOC calculates the state-responsible term and records the physical release. A projected date is planning evidence. A Parole Board grant is decision evidence. A community-district entry is supervision evidence. A receiving-agency record determines whether another custody system followed.
When records conflict, preserve the exact labels and access dates. Check whether the difference is projection versus completion, Board decision versus facility movement, or public update lag versus a maintaining-unit record. Contact the agency that created the disputed field. Avoid choosing a date solely because it supports an expected outcome.
Patrick Henry Correctional Unit is the documented VADOC unit in the Henry County facility map. A person sent there from the county jail was transferred into state custody, not released to the community. Conversely, a person leaving that unit for District 22 may be physically released while still supervised. These distinctions are central to the Henry County released-inmate verification path.
Virginia DOC Identity Matching
A seven-digit DOC ID is safer than a name-only match. When the ID is unavailable, compare the full last name, required first-name letters, age range, displayed location, and known court history. Do not identify a person from a photograph or shared name alone. Save the query and access date so a later VADOC update can be compared with the same inputs.
Henry County State Transfers
A Henry ADC movement into VADOC ends the county booking episode without ending confinement. Preserve the local release or transfer entry, then locate the state record by DOC ID. The paired documents show both sides of the handoff and prevent the county exit date from being mislabeled as community release. If VADOC later lists District 22, record that later transition separately from the first transfer.
