Federal BOP Release Meanings
The Federal Bureau of Prisons administers federal prisons, detention centers, and contracted placements for people in the federal system. It does not cover an ordinary Henry County arrest or local jail sentence. A person may appear in federal records after conviction and designation, while a federal pretrial detainee may remain in a local or contracted facility under the U.S. Marshals Service. Jurisdiction, not the building alone, controls which record applies.
BOP explains that a past release date with no facility location means the person left BOP custody on that date. That is precise but narrow. It does not say whether the person began federal supervised release, entered a residential reentry setting, transferred to a state or local authority, or entered ICE detention. State exactly what the BOP result proves, then verify any later status through the responsible system.
| BOP result | Supported conclusion | Remaining question |
|---|---|---|
| Current facility | The person is listed in BOP custody | Is the date projected? |
| Past release date, no location | The person left BOP custody on that date | Did another authority or supervision follow? |
| Future release date | The displayed date is projected | Did later computation change it? |
| No match | No record found under that search | Is the ID wrong, record older, or person pretrial? |

The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward and updates daily. Search by BOP register number in the `#####-###` format when known. The tool also accepts other listed federal identifiers. A name search can include optional age, race, and sex fields, but identifiers should be compared before selecting a same-name record.
Results include name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. Save the register number, exact release-date label, location text, and access date. Treat a future date as projected because recalculation can occur. When a past date appears with no location, use the Bureau's published explanation instead of assuming the person remains imprisoned or is fully free.
- Choose the identifier search when a register number is available.
- Use the exact legal name and cautious filters for a name search.
- Compare the result's register number and personal identifiers.
- Record the date and location exactly as BOP displays them.
- Check the federal judgment and any supported receiving jurisdiction.
Federal BOP Records Contact
Locator correspondence can be sent to the Bureau's national address. The locator is the public first step, while BOP FOIA and the DOJ-361 identity or authorization process may apply to more detailed records. Requests should identify the person by register number and specify existing documents or fields. Broad questions may not yield a custom explanation.

Ask for records that show actual release from BOP custody, the release date, last facility, and transfer or receiving agency when maintained. For pre-1982 federal custody, the National Archives may be the relevant source. A recent federal court case should also be checked through PACER for the judgment, detention order, sentence, and supervised-release terms.
The BOP locator records explanation defines the meaning and limits of the public result. That source should control the wording. A third-party directory cannot expand the result into a claim about another sovereign or provide a more reliable federal date.
Federal Release Date Evidence
A federal judgment states the sentence and any supervised-release term. BOP computes the custodial release date and maintains the custody record. A court order can establish legal authority, but the locator or BOP release record shows when Bureau custody ended. If the person was held locally before designation, the U.S. Marshals Service or the federal docket may document the movement.
The U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable public nationwide former-detainee locator. Removal from Henry County ADC on a Marshal's writ or transport order is not community release. It is a transfer under federal authority. Use PACER and the detention or release order for a federal pretrial person, then use BOP after designation. Ask the county detention center only about its own movement record when the facts show local detention.
- Federal sentence
- A term imposed by a United States court and administered in the federal system.
- Supervised release
- Court-ordered federal community oversight that generally follows imprisonment.
- Designation
- BOP placement of a sentenced person at an institution or program.
- Writ
- A court order that can direct temporary movement without ending custody.
- Release date
- The date BOP identifies for leaving its custody, projected or completed according to context.
Note: A federal court release order and a BOP release record answer related questions but should not be treated as the same document.
Federal Release Aftercare Status
Federal supervised release is not BOP prison custody. It is administered through the United States Probation Office under the federal judgment. A BOP result can show that incarceration ended while supervised release continues. The locator does not provide a complete public supervision history, so the judgment and court docket are the proper sources for the term imposed.
Residential reentry may also complicate ordinary language. A person can move from a secure institution into community confinement or home confinement while still under BOP authority. The exact BOP location and status should be used rather than calling every move a full release. After Bureau custody ends, the probation office and court record become relevant for federal community supervision.
Federal status should remain separate from Virginia's VADOC District 22. The Martinsville state office does not administer federal supervised release. Likewise, the Henry County Sheriff's Office does not maintain the federal post-sentence record. The Henry County release search overview helps route a case by custodian without blending local, state, and federal sources.
Federal Detainers and Transfers
A federal release date can lead directly to another custodian. A state warrant, local detainer, or ICE hold may take effect as BOP custody ends. The BOP result proves only its own custody period. Check the federal docket and the receiving system when the record supports a transfer. Do not search every database merely because a person is absent from BOP.
ICE detention is civil immigration custody and uses the Online Detainee Locator System, not the BOP locator. A state or county transfer uses the receiving correctional agency's locator or records office. If no receiving authority is documented, a general no-match elsewhere should not be treated as proof either way. Request the BOP transfer or release entry when available.
When a Henry County connection exists, determine whether it concerns a local case, residence, temporary jail detention, or a federal court matter. The fact that a person has ties to Henry County does not make Henry ADC the releasing agency. Contact the county control room only when the custody record shows a local booking or hold.
Federal BOP Release Verification
The strongest verification chain starts with the BOP result, continues with the federal judgment, and then branches only to a documented later authority. Preserve the register number and exact release date. If the date is in the past and no location appears, describe the person as no longer in BOP custody as of that displayed date. Then state any verified later status separately.
If two federal sources conflict, compare whether one date is projected and the other completed, whether a sentence amendment occurred, or whether the public locator lagged. The federal judgment may change on appeal or amendment, and BOP may recompute credit. Ask the creating office to resolve the discrepancy rather than applying a homemade sentence formula.
The official BOP capture below shows the federal search form and released-result format from the national locator.

The form's federal identifiers and result fields demonstrate why it should be used only for BOP records, not as a substitute for Henry County jail or VADOC searches.
